Certification of Mobile WiMAX products has started and several big name operators are committing to starting commercial roll-outs during 2008. These include BSNL in India, with an ambitious 3G/4G program; the new spectrum holders in Japan; and Orange, with plans to expand in many African territories using 802.16e. But there have been doubts cast over the risks attached to the flagship US deployments, Sprint Nextel and Clearwire, and meanwhile many other large operators are looking towards an accelerated development roadmap for LTE, which will provide many of the same performance improvements as WiMAX. Behind the grand statements, where will the dollars really be spent on WiMAX systems in 2008-10, and which operators will take the lead? Caroline Gabriel, research director of Rethink Research Associates, will discuss these issues in light of a newly updated survey of the WiMAX plans of about 500 service providers.
