Wireless Leaders of New England to Gather for First Ever Summit

| Press Release

October 8, 2008 - Boston, MA. Wireless has been a growing part of the New England economy - a trend that has been accelerating of late. To celebrate this fact, and to consider how the region can remain an "epicenter" of wireless innovation in a Web 2.0 world, New England's wireless leadership will gather October 21 for the first ever New England Mobile Summit, to be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008.

The New England Mobile Summit is co-located with Mobile Internet World - www.mobilenetx.com - which is being held in Boston at the Boston Convention and Exhibitors Center on October 21-23, 2008. Mobile Internet World is the industry's largest conference and expo focused on the emerging mobile Internet marketplace.

"New England's role as a pivotal player in the wireless industry has been under-recognized, compared to Silicon Valley, and even Seattle and San Diego", says Mark Lowenstein, Managing Director, Mobile Ecosystem and the Summit's organizer and conference chair. "But look at the track record: several of our largest market cap companies -- American Tower, Analog Devices, Nuance, Starent -- are in wireless, as are many recent successful "exits" - Airvana, M-Qube, VoiceSignal, Third Screen Media, Enpocket, and Optasite. I would also estimate that we have over half a billion dollars invested in wireless-related companies from prominent local venture capital firms."

A key goal of the Summit is to discuss how New England is positioned to capitalize on the next phase of the wireless industry's growth, which is much more closely linked to Web 2.0, the Mobile Internet, open development platforms, and consumer content and applications. "Here, the picture is more mixed", explains Lowenstein. "We have some exciting 'Mobile 2.0' companies, such as Jumptap and MoCoSpace, and Google's Android has a large presence here, but many leaders I talk to wonder whether we have the DNA to build a $1 billion+ consumer-oriented company in wireless. There's huge competition for talent in this area."

The Summit is divided into four sessions:

  • "State of the New England Mobile Economy" - an opening address by Mark Lowenstein
  • Leadership Panel: Industry Directions, Opportunities, and Challenges, featuring CEOs of some of our most prominent companies and investors
  • New England and Mobile 2.0: Focus on Consumer Applications
  • Building the Investment, Talent, and Organizational Infrastructure, moderated by Scott Kirsner of the Boston Globe.

Featured speakers include:

  • Jon Auerbach, Partner, Charles River Ventures
  • Randy Battat, CEO, Airvana
  • George Grey, CEO, SnapMyLife
  • Steve Krom, President, New England Region, AT&T Mobility
  • Adam Soroca, Chief Product Officer, Jumptap
  • Jim Ricotta, CEO, Azuki Systems
  • Gennady Sirota, VP, Product Management, Starent Networks
  • Kevin Wood, CEO, Airwide Solutions
  • E.Y. Snowden, Chairman, Tatara Systems and former CEO, BCGI
  • Scott Kirsner, Innovation Economy Columnist, Boston Globe

"We look forward to welcoming New England's wireless leadership, as well as executives coming in from all over the country for Mobile Internet World", said Lowenstein.
